very elaborate google doodle today

london
Google often does lovely headings in their search page, and today i saw one that is particularly spectacular to commemorate the 107th anniversary of a cartoonist i have never heard of.
winsor mcCay, nemo in slumberland.

Not sure if the link to the google page works, but for today anyway u will be able to see it just by going to the google search page.
added. go here to catch up on all their doodles.

i discovered the doodle when i opened the search page to google DMT, as it was mentioned as being very similar to the visions experienced by this neurosurgeon who had a near death experience and is now convinced there is an afterlife.

this article refuted it and worth reading even if u believe in an afterlife and the near death visions of people who have come back from the dead.

Added.12.30pm i see the first sign of winter, british gas raising its electricity and gas rates. haha. it will be raised 6% from 16nov. this happens so often that it can be permanently added to the first signs that winter is coming.

naturally, i could not be bothered as its effect on me is minimal. when u use so little energy, it does not matter how much they raise the rates.

it just means that i save more for every 1kwh of electricity i cut from using. to me, that is a great incentive to cut my usage even more.

unfortunately i have to live with others who are not so thrifty. haha.

but i guess that is life too. lots of people who are wasters of energy, of food, of water, etc etc. they dont see it , that is why they blame the govt, british gas, everyone but themselves for the price rises.

you dont get newspapers saying to people why dont u cut down on your usage of electricity and gas? that is a better way than shifting from one gas provider to another, chasing that elusive cheap rate.

people always say they have cut their usage to the bone, but of course if u look at it , u will find there is plenty of savings to be made.

i find it saves money not to use the oven. or use it less. i find that cooking the same amount of pork as a roast costs more in the oven than if u cook it as a stew on the stove.

Added.20.10.12 found out that using the top oven is just as economical as stewing. but the temp of roasting is important too. set it to 200C for 15mins(i was roasting pork and i wanted the crackling) and then bring it down to about 170C for the rest of the time. roast it for about 1.5hr and then let it cook inside the oven using up the residual heat. if roasting beef, i think u can just set it to about 170C.

and my pork stew ,  thinly sliced pork with ginger, garlic, onions , chilli, black soya sauce ,tastes marvelous. full of flavour. the way i cook it is to bring it to the boil from cold, and simmer on low heat, lid tightly shut, for about 5minutes and then switch off and keep covered and let the heat continue to cook the meat till the whole thing cools. even better if u can wrap the pot in insulation, a single size duvet, or sleeping bag, will do.

or one of those shopping bags with insulation which u can find in supermarkets for bringing back frozen foods.

i just remembered, i can use a blanket. i have found so many fleece blankets, i can use them.

Added. 20.10.12 the blanket etcdont seem very necessary,  the pork gets cooked anyway

can advertising persuade u to buy things inspite of yourself?

london

Added.3.3.12
everyone seems to agree that targetting adverts to your interests is a good thing. i thought so too, but than isn't this similar to reading a newspaper that u agree with? u never get a chance to hear another viewpoint, or even an opposing viewpoint. same with adverts, u get sent all the things u are interested in, but what about sending stuff that is there but u do not know exists , and so do not know if u will be interested in them or not. if google just sends u stuff that it has computerised from previous viewings that u have indicated u like, will you ever see stuff that is new and u never know if u like or not? or is this careful vetting of adverts not going to stop them sending u new stuff... i think all this talk of personalised adverts may not be so watertight as they make out. lots of rubbish that u will never like will be sent to you as well.  But let me tell you something. to date, i have never been sent any adverts. Either that, or i have been sent but they are so discreet and to the sides that i have evolved the ability to totally not see them. haha. it is like i have put them in my blind spot.
maybe evolution is playing its part and soon all of us will be able to filter the adverts out... and they will constantly have to evolve new adverts and strategies to outwit our defense. hohohahaa.
Added. 9.3.12 a letter in the FT today from a mr andy turner, said he experienced two things that made him doubt the accuracy of the targetting.
he was searching for 'ken livingstone' and they sent him adverts for victoria falls. haha
and he bought a barbeque and found subsequently bombarded with the same company trying to sell him one.

This article in the independant about google's changing of its privacy policy made me think.
Google's policy of using your data to send you personalised adverts seem to imply that advertisements can alter your spending habits in that it can persuade u to buy something that you dont want.
i dont think it can but it can persuade u to chose one thing over another if u have not made up your mind which one to buy.

i think that is the premise of advertising. if u allready want to buy a shoe, advertising will persuade u to buy one brand over another.

That is why so many firms advertise and google is in a very good place to cater for it and to make money out of it.

Personally, i dont believe it is true that advertising is all that influential, but whisper it. whether it is true or not, it enables a lot of things to get paid for by advertising which would not have happened otherwise. not least of which are all our free things we get on the internet. Like this blog for eg. so i am not complaining. haha.

Added.3.3.12 i think only a small fraction of us human beings are influenced by advertising. but there are so many of us humans in this world, even a small fraction is a huge number, and so fortunes can be made with them. i dont mind businesses exploiting such people, because the people who i think are exploited may not take that view. to them those businesses provided them with a service they want. so i wont impose my views on them and tell them off.
it is a bit like privacy crusaders who want to tell us our privacy is invaded and we should object that google is pooling its information about you and directing relevant (or what its computers think is relevant, which is not the same thing, haha) to us.

it reminds me of someone who tells me i should be insulted when someone makes a remark about me that i thought was innocuous.

Windows either could not or did not wish to use the information it has of us to target us. maybe it has not got the software to do it and google has.

i mean just think if it had, during the time in the past when all of us have windows...
maybe they are being altruistic. for eg, even now my windows live, (which used to be outlook express), which brings together all my emails in one site, dont have advertising. so i get to do all my emails using it and avoid the advertising in the original websites of the individual companies.

Whether you think advertising is a bad thing or not depands on your attitude.
if u believe that u cannot get something for nothing, that there is a price to pay, u will accept that the price of getting free services from google is letting them send u personalised adverts.
In fact, some of us might even welcome it because then we dont get irritated by adverts that send us stuff we have no interest in.
for eg, being a gay guy i have no interest in women's menstruation products and will be happy to have it blocked.or women fashions, cosmetics (though trannies might welcome those) or even straight themed adverts. so i think it is a good thing.

also, i know damn well i have the strength of mind not to be fooled by adverts urging me to buy something that i had not thought i wanted before seeing it. i believe most of us are not robots who will go out and buy something just because we keep seeing adverts telling us to do so.

Anyway, our economy depands on people buying things, and so if advertising gets people buying things they dont need, so be it... haha.
that is the economy we live in, and seeing there is no other way of living, we have to hope there are enough people buying and selling so the rest of us can enjoy this way of life.

it reminds me of coffee shops like starbucks etc....or places like macdonalds ... if not for those who gives it profit by buying its stuff, we wont be having all these shops for us to spend time in out of the rain, and have free wifi and newspapers to read. haha. and toilets to go to.
Added 6.3.12 i noticed i have spelt Mcdonalds wrong, but i wont bother to change it. because i could not be arsed.

I used to do it before in the past, use their toilets without paying for anything, (and use gay bars' toilets too...)but not anymore as there are other places to go to and free public toilets are more numerous now, esp in london.

Some might say u are scrounging on them. it is a bit like that but as i dont object to their presence, and am all for others buying their stuff and supporting their business by allowing them to exist, i think it is a fair exchange.

You might say , oh big deal, as if little you's opinion means a lot. but remember if plenty of us object to their presence, we can vote them away by pressuring our council to do away with them. like the pole dancing clubs whose numbers council is trying to restrict. some moral majority(or it couldbe a minority) is pressuring council to do it and they are succeeding.
I see nothing to object in pole dancing clubs, but i guess someone dont like them.

remember if they refuse to let us use their toilets insisting that we pay first, enough of us will not go in, and sooner or later the lack of people in there will be apparent. it will look dead.
I remember a pub in st martins lane, the salisbury,  it is a rather nice looking old fashioned pub, that has this policy on the door which says toilets are for patrons only. Well, it always looked empty. maybe it did not want to just attracted tourists who would go in have a look, use the toilet and walk out and alienated its regulars.
I have not walked that street for ages so not sure if it still there or if it is making money.

Practically any shop in london's westend will make money, or those owners are hopeless. The footfall in the westend is very attractive to shop owners.

if any business fails it will be because they have loaded themselves with debt , either through a private equity buy out, or a silly attempt to update themselves and overrun the budget.

lots to write about but not really worth posting

london
I guess finally google has forced me to download google chrome.
it all began when i could not write a post on my blog. it took ages to download and the little logo which whirls round and round just kept on going.
so in desperation, i clicked on their 'try the new blogger template' or words to that effect, which i forgot what the exact wordings were.

Well, i have clicked on it before and it just destroyed everything i was familiar with and i got so shit scared, there was a button which said u can go back to what it was before, and i hit it immediately.

but now there was no button to say i can go back.

so what to do?

i cannot go back so i had to accept a fait accompli on their part. They have won. they have forced me to take google chrome.

so i did and here i am using it.

I daresay it is quicker than windows. ah well, that is life isn't it? u get something for free (and i am talking of blogger) and get so used to it and like doing it, then they sweep the carpet from you and faced with losing everything, u capitulate.

but i guess maybe sometimes u have to be forced to do something for your own good... haha. who knows right?

google chrome may well turn out to be better than windows.

my title for this post was the original one where i just wanted to write things without anything to write about. there are lots i can say, about the news mainly, and how futile it can be to comment on it...

i could talk about that utube of the bus driver who deliberately caught up with a cyclist and knocked him over. looking at the video u would think that driver is mad. and he was jailed.
but later u hear that actually earlier the driver came too close to that cyclist and the cyclist went road rage, caught up with the bus, and began to shout and rave and broke one of the bus wiper.

i think that is provocative behaviour and the judge should take that into account. some cyclists can be too self righteous. i think that cyclist should take a lot of the blame too.

but of course, no one says so and he even have the gall to say he forgives the driver. ha.

anyway i could write about that, and have done so haha. but really it is neither here nor there because who cares what i think???

but now that i have been forced to go on google chrome, i can have something to write about now. haha.

my intial reaction was how awful that they can force me to change and download chrome when i have no intention of doing so.

but then i got things in perspective and realise that if i am to use google's blogger, they own it, and want me to use chrome, i suppose i should do it really.

i shall have to get used to figuring out how to operate it, right now i dont know how to increase the size of text , not in this post where the controls are the same, but in the webpages. now when i view my blog , the text is so small unlike last time when i view it in windows, where it is easy to make it bigger.
added. i found out how to do it so that is allright. on the whole it really is very fast. the pages can download almost immediately. what a nice change from windows which can take ages.
Added 22.2.12 slowing down again. not sure if it is my old laptop, or my internet provider or chrome. most probably the former two. I also noticed my download has gone up to 2.8G that day. usually it is less than 1G. or do u think i could get the pages so fast i start clicking on everything in sight, whereas before it was so slow, i am selective of what i download so as not to slow the speed even more.
Added 24.2.12 correction , i actually downloaded 0.8G . my talk talk graph on how much i download each day lags a few days before showing it. so it does not increase the download  using chrome. now i have a few days of usage, i like chrome a lot.

to think i had recommended blogger to a chap who wanted to start a blog. i told him i had no trouble with it and now i am getting all this complications.  but he is a member of googleplus so would have used chrome anyway. or if he has not, will soon be forced to.

For ages beforehand i had been getting a warning notices  that googleplus webpage had been telling me my browser, which was windows, is not supported. i could still see the posts in there in my laptop, though in my library, i could not view them via the computers there.

well here goes, publishing it now.

I had a look at my blog and now i can see the weather chart on my sidebar now. before it was blocked , somehow when i upgrade to IE8, i click on a button which says something like protect your security restrict downloads of unsafe items, (or words to that effect) and i clicked on that to find that it stopped the weather chart, my videos and the clock from being seen. but now i can see all those.
so that is something good about chrome then, haha.

google chrome

london
Today i went to the google store in tottenham crt road to try out the chromebook. Their name for the laptops.
the store is way at the other end of the road from oxford st.

there were lots of the laptops to play with and no one else there.
it was a small screen samsung.

it was not easy to clear the url box for a start. Unlike with my laptop, i just have to double click on the previous address to highlight it and can write my new address straight away. with the chromebook i have to use the delete or backspace button to sweep it clean.

And when i got into my hotmail account and tried to type in @ , i got something else. i asked the assistant and he came and prod about with it and found out someone had changed it to hungarian.

i posted once upon a time saying i would like to play with this smaller screen to see what it is like, as i was thinking of getting a netbook at that time, and now i got the chance.
and i am not impressed. The screen is too small. i have to scroll down a lot just to read the page. even more if i make the fonts larger size.

It made me realise i wont like a small screen. I shall stick to a big screen if ever i get a new laptop.

it seems google has no big screen laptop. these ones are about £349 and £399. added. found from this link that it is much more expensive than those sold in usa. and way more expensive than netbooks which they are similar to.

i mentioned to the shop assistant that my google page asks me to download chrome on my laptop, and the assistant says you will only get the browser, and no apps.he said it is best to buy the chromebook as it is all integrated. they only sell these two brands, acer and samsung, and only this size screen.

So just as well i did not download the chrome browser.

On the specification no mention of the RAM, so i asked him, and he said  the laptops have 2G RAM and 16GB hard drive. That gave me a frisson when i heard him say 16G. that is like the capacity of a mobile phone. We are so used to big harddrives.
but of course, since everything is in the cloud there is no need for a big storage harddrive.

This can be a disadvantage. it means u have to watch movies by streaming only and cannot store them in your laptop.

it seems u cannot store movies and music in the cloud. Google only allows u to store pictures.
and he did not know , (but says maybe not), whether you can store home videos.

anyway, it seems u watch movies via streaming and that means a lot of broadband downloaded everytime u watch the movies. unlike now if u store the movie, u need only download it once, and the rest of the time u can watch the movies without incurring any more downloads.
I said movies, but what i mean is really porn movies. haha.
it is no fun watching big screen movies on the small screen of the laptop. especially when no matter how much they elongate the screen, u still get the two black bands on top and bottom of the screen.

Considering i am only allowed 40Gb maximum download every month from my talk talk provider ,not being able to store movies is a great disadvantage.  this is an important consideration for me and i bet for a lot of people who have home broadband.

I belong to a gay website that allows me to download and store porn free. not that i use it much, but still it is nice to know it is there. so i only need to use the download broadband once only. after that i can view them without any more demands on my broadband limit.

I cannot imagine how they will overcome this limitation. no one will be able to use the cloud if they are limited in their download capacity as it is  so much more expensive monthly tariff to have unlimited broadband downloads. though if u get free wifi at wifi points in the library or whatever, it might not be important.

Then when i wanted to close the page, i found there is no single button or command . you have to press control and w to close the page.

And to switch off there is no single command either.

Maybe that is why it takes only 8 seconds to boot. it is never switched off. that is why.

with my laptop, i too can get quick boot up, if i put the laptop on sleep mode. but it uses electricity.
though i am thinking i might just keep the laptop on sleep mode unless i close it down for the night. i am sure booting and rebooting will take electricity too.

anyway it was rather interesting to play with the chrome, and getting more useful info from the assistant and finding out its limitations.

on the way back , i passed the shops selling computers all along the tottenham crt road, there was a billboard advertising a laptop for £199 . 1gbRAM, 250G harddrive . it said it was a retuned laptop. i forgot the exact wording. There was also advertised a 2GB RAM 500G harddrive selling for £299. both toshiba brand.
Added 19.10.11 saw an advert in today's paper from Dell, £299 for 3GB RAM and 350G drive.

I am surprised that they dont use the chrome for the mobile phones like blackberry or iphone or ipad. it seems to me it is more suitable for use with mobile phones. or maybe mobile phones allready use the chrome. perhaps chrome is a google product and apple is not wanting to use them.

What it has made my mind up is that i will stick to the bigscreen laptop, and dont bother to buy these small laptops.

bloggers new interface

london
I have seen this alert a number of times telling me to try it.
My god, when i did, it was so alien, nothing of the previous interface remained and i was totally lost. instead of showing everything in one page, it seems to have broken it into separate pages. I cannot find the features that were so easily found in the old interface.

I quickly revert to the old interface and i hope they will let me continue to use it rather than force me to use the new interface.
i cannot imagine what made them change, why fix something that ain't broke???

but i guess these nerds just want to meddle. well i wish they would do it with a beta first and iron out all the mistakes. unless they allready thought they had, and rolled it out. But it is so alien, at least keep the good features of the old interface.
But frankly, i would urge them not to bother and just keep the old interface. i cannot see how it can be improved.
