nothing much to say

london
I have not much to say these few days after my last post at christmas day. Oh lots of things have been happening and when i thought of writing about them, i changed mmy mind. Because many of those things have happened to me before, or I have said my thoughts on it many times before.

or they are things happening in the world which are remote from my life and so i am not upset or worried about them.

I know lots of people will say 'but we must be bothered at what the world is coming to. That near disaster on that delta flight where they caught the terrorist, the snowstorms and ice we are having, etc etc. We must do something about it.'
But really, if u are not personally caught up in it, they are of no consequence.

There will be lots more deaths, and bad weather, and lots of mayhem to come, but they mean nothing if u are not involved directly. it is just that these news which normally in olden days u would not bother with are sent directly to ur home via 24hr news on tv, or internet, or newspapers online, as well as on print, makes people read about it and so they get to know about it. But it wont really affect those of us who are sensibly staying at home instead of jetting all over the world, or travelling to those hotspots.

Why do those people get caught up in those things? because their souls want it. No doubt it must be quite exciting to look back on that flight and realise such drama has taken place on board and u were in it, and lived to tell the tale. I am sure everyone on board would dine out on it for a long time. haha.

People might say dont be frivolous, these things are serious.

If the news never report these things, it will be a good thing. All it does now is make flying even more tedious what with all that increased security. Some things it is better not to know, in my opinion.

But i know my opinion is in the minority of one.

Just as well i m not in charge of security. hahaa.

I saw the tv program , An englishman in new york, last night. You would think quentin crisp is the hero of gays for daring to be out gay so long ago, when being gay is dangerous and illegal. But peter tatchel has criticised him.

I would have an opinion on this in the past, but not anymore. After all, quentin crisp lived his life the way he wanted it, and that is that. What is the use of criticising him for not being radical enough , or advocate gay rights, or whatever. It is the public that wants to put more into his life than he meant. he was only living it to the best of his ability and desire. That is all. As should all of us if we are wise. haha.

So there is nothing to write, and i thought perhaps i should make a post of this. So that it is to show there is no need to have a cause to make ur life worthwhile. u can have my permission to do nothing and waste time. haha. others might call it wasting time, but to you it is the most meaningful part of ur life, when u can be just yourself, enjoying your life, without any need to cook up a reason to justify ur existence.

A friend come to visit on christmas day

london
A friend whose boyfriend died about 8months ago came to visit me. he wants company I think, and i am free, so it was nice to chat with him. I can be just as happy being on my own.

He had been driving to two other friends, personally delivering christmas cards to them. I am glad he came to see me instead of just deliver a card. haha.

We chatted about this and that, he tells me he cannot function without having someone special in his life, to care for and to be cared for.

I have heard that there are such people and my friend is one of them. Quite an affliction, I think. I am a cynic, and i m sure plenty will not agree with me that it is an affliction.

It is the norm isn't it to want to care for a special someone and to be cared for and live happily ever after. haha.

I dont buy that. haha.

But he does, so i suggested he put an advert in the gay webpages specifically saying he is looking for someone who cannot live without a boyfriend, and is desperately looking for one, and to contact him to find out if he is suitable. haha.

Who knows, it might work. Even though gay websites are notorious for being a meat market. but i met simon in gaydar, so you can find a boyfriend even in the most unexpected areas.

later, he drove us to chinatown, thinking to have a coffee in old compton street, but when we reached there, only one coffee place was open, and so he decided he would like to eat in chinatown, and use their toilet. Not many places were opened and those that did have raised their prices and have large queues.

We picked this one in gerrard street, which is normally a chinese sweet shop selling paos, and sweet bread and tarts and yau cha kueh(fried dough), and is a tea shop really, but it serves noodles, and seemingly at normal prices. There was a short wait for a table to be free, and we shared one table with a chinese man and woman. Which turned out to be lucky, because the waitress cannot speak english, and even though we pointed to the menu, she asked me questions in mandarin, and i have not a clue what she was talking about.
The other couple translated for us.

It turned out they are from singapore, the woman is on her 4th year medical course in leicester university and the man was in his 2nd year mechanical engineering course in the same university. They are visiting london, stayed in the city, and only today realised no buses or tubes, and had to walk from there to chinatown to eat.

It is simply amazing to me that a big city like london can have so many places closed down and a non running public transport system on christmas day.

All those tourists wandering around town like lost souls.haha. They were grateful for any restaurant opened. the woman singaporean told us this restaurant has a 20% service charge today. I did not know that as there was nothing mentioned, in english anyway. lucky she told us,otherwise we will query that in the bill, and it wouldjust be awkward. We were so glad there was a restaurant opened, that we were happy to pay the charge when you consider the staff have to work over this holiday. There was a long queue at the door when we left.

naturally, it was my friend's treat. I would never agree to eating out on this day of all days, otherwise. £14 for two, includes two wanton/char siu hor fun noodles £4 each and 2 cups of chinese tea £1.50each and service charge).I can tell u i wont want to pay it if i were paying. haha. I can easily make it for a fraction of the cost at home. and it would taste better too.haha.

If someone wants to treat me, I will graciously accept, who am i to deter them? My friend was very happy to do so, and he said he had a nice time. There is only so much we can do at my flat, so a little wander around soho and chinatown is rather pleasant.

I was reminded why i dont eat out much. the wonton was very salty. Though it might just be me, because my friend put more salt on his. wow!!! maybe he mistook the salt cellar for pepper?

a nice new year greeting from ian

london
got an email from ian. he designs websites and this year's web greeting design is lovely.

http://www.ihembury.co.uk/2010/?navMenu=1

double clik on it or left clik and u can move it and change the pattern of the kaleidoscope. u can vary the speed of the rotation too.

I shall call the coming decade the teenies.

Would we have guessed what the noughties are like when we were in the 80s, or 90s?

Actually, to me it is just like the 80s or 90s. Nothing much has changed except for the internet. I mean we have not got space travel, or cars that can fly, or futuristic cities with traffic on different levels. No robots to do the housework either.

and what will the next decade be like? we are entering science fiction territory. 2020. who would have thought we shall be living to see its coming? I bet it will be like now.

it will also be good to look back to now when we are there and having a blog will help to remind u of what u thought or did then.

Sometimes, some one comments on a post long ago, and it brings that post to my attention and often i find i have forgotten things that happened.

I find i am very interested in the mundane things that happen, the ordinary things, my interactions with people i meet or who come across my life path even if fleetingly.

Added. I went to the supermarkets to find out whether they are opened during christmas and boxing day.

The adverts say some of them will be opened. but the tesco and sainsbury's in pimlico are closed for both days. Maybe that is why there were so many shoppers even at 5pm, so near to their closing time of 6pm today. They are all panic buying.

People were laden with shopping trolleys and there were traffic jams of trolleys in the aisles.

There was only one employee doing the reduced pricing and so there was a queue of people to wait for her to get round to reducing what they wanted. But the reductions were not very much, about half the usual prices instead of a third or a quarter like usual. Couple that with the queue to pay was very long,I ended up not staying nor buying anything.

I have an intense dislike of following the crowds.

My policy of not following the crowd is a good policy. Too many people are buying madly now.

Added. 25.12.09.I just realised the irony of reading this on christmas day. haha. it just goes to show my friends are not really interested in christmas. If anything, it makes more sense to celebrate the winter solstice on 21 dec. At least that is a significant date, as it is the shortest day, and from then on, the days gets longer and we head off to a new year.

If we are sensible about these things we should take the winter solstice as the start of a new year.

found beach towel

my christmas reading materials borrowed from the children's library.
a beach towel i found on a rainy day. It turned out to be an ideal beach towel.

london

I was exercising in the gym this morning, and for no reason at all I thought of this beach towel which i found when i was with john coming back from the sex pub on saturday. At the time, I just thought I need a beach towel and brought it home; even john looked dubious about taking it, because when i first saw it, it was wet with rain and looking bedraggled. But in the gym it occurred to me that this one i found is really an ideal size and texture for a beach towel.

It is very well designed. Not too big. At first, I thought it was too small, because i have seen most beach towels and they are huge. I realise now those large sizes are a gimmick. You dont need a huge beach towel, as it is only for one person to lie on. This one I found is a size which is ideal , does not take up much room when rolled up, and has a close weave, so that the sand does not get through.
I have used an ordinary bath towel before as a beach towel, and it is not suitable as a beach towel. The sand gets through the weave and sticks to the bath towel. And the bath towel is too soft, it bunches up and become smaller as you move about on it.

When I got back from the gym, I examined it more closely, and found that it is a pixar, disney made. Quite good quality actually, and features the Incredibles,(the film of the cartoon will be shown on christmas day at 3.10pm bbc1)
Added 26.12.09 I caught the last section of the movie, and it is really very nice animation. What i saw of it. I taped it, but when i rewind to see the beginning, it had not been recorded. The tape was not working. Ah well, nevermind, i m just glad i saw the ending, which is the most exciting part i think with all their powers being shown in action.
in bright cheerful colours. It should stand out in a crowded beach and be easy to spot, which is another thing that a good beach towel should be.

John has gone now, and I have the place to myself again. And my suggestion to the charity to let my friend take my place, rather than spend £35 on a taxi ride for me has been accepted. so that is good.

It means i shall be doing nothing on christmas day, but that is fine by me. haha.

I got the monthly email from my phone company about my november phone bill. I was really shocked to find it came to £46. £30 was made by John M , who lives in florida, when he came to my place to stay. Thank goodness he dont come to visit too often. haha.

I returned all my library books today, and browsed a long time at the library looking for new books to borrow. But in the end i could not find any novels that i like so I borrowed 4 asterix and 2 tin tin comics from the children's library instead.

harrods, 'Victoria and Albert' museum trip

this one taken this morning in natural light shows the colours better.
its strange that the spider man face did not come out well in the photo taken at night under artificial light. The chair can be folded up. It looks like a kid's chair, but i think it is a fisherman's chair.

london
This time we walked to harrods. On the way i passed the recycling bins and showed john a carpet and fisherman's chair that has been put there since morning.

I could do with the chair when we arrived near harrods, because there were not many places to sit only a circular granite wall surrounding a tree and it is spattered with pigeon shit. In the end we went all the way to the Macdonalds end, where there were benches on the pavement across the road, for us to sit and have the fried rice with frankfurter topped with one fried egg, which i packed earlier.

It was delicious, and very restful to sit there and watch the traffic pass by. There was a caucasian man who was allready sitting on the bench. When we were eating, he left and i noticed he left his bag . I observed to john he is very trusting, or he has forgotten to take his bag. John said he might have just gone away for a short time. And sure enough he came back with a japanese takeaway, those tiny round things which are rice wrapped in seaweed from the cafe behind us. Which he ate with chopsticks. What is strange is that he did not sit on the chairs provided by the cafe where he can use the table provided but prefer to sit on these public benches.

We retrace our steps to go back to harrods and have a browse. It was not as interesting as selfridges. John wanted to go see the pets on the 4th floor, but there were not many live animals, as it used to have in the past. Now there were only hamsters, guinea pigs and kittens. There were 'british short hairs' kittens £1000 each. Siamese kittens were £800 each. And coral fishes(not for sale) in a tank.

then off we walked to the Victoria and Albert museum, where we saw the medieval exhibition going on now. Mostly church art really. quite interesting and free to see. The maharaja exhibition is on too but that u have to pay to see.

After a pleasant time inside we went out to catch the bus 360 and diverted to take in the ice skaters outside the Science museum.

I found a child's one day tube/bus ticket for 6zones dated today. It was on the ground. Someone had dropped it, hope they dont have to pay extra. I left it where i found it, as some child might find it and can use it. I cannot use it.

We passed the recycling bins on the way home and i saw the collapsible chair is still there. John asked me to sit on it, saying these things can be unstable, so i sat, and it was very steady. So john said take it it might be useful, adding if we dont like it we can bring it back. certainly it would be useful if we had taken it today, haha. So i took it.

If i were to live outside london and am coming in on new year eve to see the fireworks it would be really useful. But I am not, so i shall have to wait for another chance to use it.

It has a spiderman cloth seat which i think rather endearing.

After dinner of sphaghetti with meat bolognaise sauce which i cooked very quickly (that dish is the easiest and fastest to cook) john got online to print his boarding pass, to be told that there is a problem with printing out the SAS boarding pass using internet explorer version 8. The pass will be corrupted and cannot be used for boarding. So that was that. John will have to do it the normal way by going to the checkin desk at the airport. Frankly I dont think much of SAS's online procedures.

he leaves early tomorrow to catch the flight at about 1pm, and is jittery about the weather stopping him. so many people have their journey disrupted by the weather.

Rather him than me. haha.

Added 7.16am 23.12.09 . John tells me there are delays in heathrow. I said, It's not snowing. he said. Fog. I laughed. According to the weather website it's -2.7C and clear near me, but -4C and freezing fog in heathrow. The tv news says -16C, colder than alaska it seems, in the highlands of scotland.

What is with this uk? if it is not snow , it is fog, but always disruptions just from winter. Unless, northern countries have these things all the time during winter, so they are not news, so never mentioned in the news, so people think they dont have it. (Here, it is on the news all the time.)when actually they have it and just cope with it. For eg car owners putting metal tracks on their wheels.

This practise in uk of salting the roads is very inefficient and bad for the environment, adding so much salt to the area. They might be better off telling people to buy metal tracks and put it on their wheels. But i dont see any company advertising it and selling it. Why, I wonder? Do u think the metal tracks ruin the roads if they are not covered in snow?

I had a email from the foodchain charity about the arrangements to get us to the kitchen this friday, Christmas day. They told me a taxi costing £35 has been ordered to take me there on christmas day and someone else with a car has offered to give me a lift back.

it is too much really to waste money on a taxi, so i suggested to the foodchain organiser that Geoff, who lives near the tooting kitchen could take over from me. He wanted to do it, and he can walk to the kitchen and back. So no need to bother with paying a taxi to get him there.

I hope they can rearrange things to use geoff instead of me. I think what they should have done right from the start is to ask for volunteers who can make their own way to the kitchen, and chose those people who can. That way they dont have to pay taxi fares. I am glad Geoff wanted to do it.

window shopping in oxford street.

london
John had enough of sex now so wanted to do something other than that. So we decided to go walkabout in oxford st and go to debenhams to have our packed lunch, like we did a long time ago, (when they were giving a free paring knife, which i still have and use for cutting fruits.) and to browse selfridges.

I made egg and frankfurter sandwiches and coffee in the thermos, and margarine and apricot jam sandwich and off we went.

It's really lovely in debenhams, the central space that extend from basement to roof, opened up 4floors to the roof is delightful and makes the interior so light and spacious. We had a wander around the place before we walked to Selfridges.

If u havent been to selfridges before u will be in for a treat. it is so spacious and unstuffy, the first floor mens fashion is first class, with the goods displayed in spacious arrangements. Delightful to browse.

We saw a Galliano hoodie with double pockets on the sleeves which costs a staggering £660. But it was very well made and the detail is excellent. I had a nice time going through the other collections feeling the material and admiring the details in the design. The layout makes for a really restful and unhurried browse, and the temperature was just right too, even though we were wearing all those warm clothing.

Thank goodness that my days of coverting such designer clothes are over, othewise it would be a very costly shopping trip. haha.

John's particular interest was in the underwear section. And it was a real nice eye candy models in the underwear section, showing those bubble butts. they are only manikins of course, but we gay guys know such bubble butts do exist in real life. haha. Those of us who are lucky enough to have sex with one, at least, will know how nice it is to play with. haha.

We had a lovely time, and it did not cost us a penny. It snowed when we got out of selfridges, and that makes it rather christmassy. Such large flakes falling gently down, such a lovely sight.

If it had been a nice night we would have walked back, but i for one was tired out walking the shops so I was glad the snow gave us a good excuse to take the bus back.

Added. I have to keep an eye on John when he cooks. He has switched on the wrong ring in my electric stove, and had it full blast. he does not seem to understand my cooker. Maybe because he cannot see the controls marker.
Anyway tonight he repeated the same mistake. hmm, it seems i shall have to keep checking on him when he cooks. The strange thing is he can see the unused ring shining bright red and must be aware it is on. But it seems that does not seem to register with him. I know some people cannot see what they dont want to see even though it is right in front of their eyes and shining a bright angry red.

it heated up the handle of the pan and when he made to pick up the pan by its handle, he nearly burnt his hand. I am glad he did not otherwise it would be more serious.

Hmm, i can see why people dont like to leave old people on their own.haha. poor john is getting old. he is ok with his own cooker, but not when it is anything new. A sign of old age when u cannot adapt to anything new. Sigh, unfortunately we all will grow old. I must remember to keep a discreet eye on him from now on.

John's soul wants to make his life difficult, i have a lot of past experience of it. My soul would like to tell his soul to stop it, and not do it when he is in my flat and with me, for my soul wants none of that.

part of the old age is the low attention span. John doesnot seem to pick up on his mistake and try to pay more attention to it so that it does not repeat.

I always almost as a matter of routine, swiftly go through my actions and see where what i did at that particular time, to get that unwanted consequence, and i resolve not to repeat it. But john is not unusual in not noting how his actions bring on consequences. I would say the majority of people is like him.

When i was young, i used to be like that. Going through life as if i was in a fog, not linking consequence with my actions. It did not matter than, because i was young, and was working and was rich and really was just young, and when u r young, the body is very forgiving. So anything just rolls over my back without giving me any harm. You can party late and get up next day early and work, u can smoke and drink till u pass out or vomit, (that vomitting after drinking cured me of getting drunk)and u will be ok the next day and no harm done. Not when u carry on doing those things when you are old.

I was fortunate to observe and realise that as i grow older, my body is more unforgiving of abuses to it. Bones of old people do not heal so quick, wounds fester for longer, and you cannot simply ignore the harm u inflict on ur body anymore.

It is strange that when people go older they dont realise this and just go on repeating their mistakes. They dont seem to make the connection between their actions and what happened to them and how old age and an ageing body is very unforgiving.

something to do on a sunday

london
I have just got back frm the charity food delivery which i do some sundays. This one is the sunday closests to christmas, with the charity actually doing one on christmas day itself. Christmas day this year is on a friday. The charity is celebrating its 21st anniversary that is why it is having a christmas delivery even though it is not on a sunday.

I will be really interested in seeing how they will provide us with transport to the kitchens as there will be no public transport on christmas day.

this sunday was very different, in that even though i arrived at 11am, the kitchen staff were hanging about and no obvious signs of cooking taking place. Usually at this time they are busy cooking. So we did not have much time to hang about and enjoy the coffee. There was whipped cream to add to the coffee, and I can tell u , for sheer luxury, nothing beats whipped cream in coffee. They must have got a lot of whipped cream because it was provided with the fluffy spotted dick that the cook made for our breakfast.

I slipped and landed on my bum when i walked up to the first delivery. Luckily, no harm done, but after that I became much more careful.

One delivery was not at home on our route, and when we tried to call the mobile phone number we got an answering machine instead. So I got myself an african meal. We are allowed to take it if we want, rather than have it wasted as these meals cannot keep.

I noticed though that in the main meal, there were only 3pieces of beef in it. I wonder whether the troubles are causing the charity to reduce the amount, or is it only a rare mishap, whereby whoever is serving the portion did not in such haste, and not realise there is not much meat in it. I sincerely hope they are not reducing the amount nor the variety of food because of costs.

The route is a difficult one made more difficult because of the map given to us. It is not in sequence and has to be opened out all at once and it is a large map with many sections.

One driver so disliked the route, she was so upset when she found out she was given that route. She recently joined and did that route the last time she was here. So i changed with another navigator so she can have a different route. I quite agree with her about the traffic jams. she especially mentioned purley way going south. I usually go by another route whenever i navigate before and so had been avoiding the jam without realising it. And south london is riddled with railway lines, so that u can only cross them at certain places and its a bit of a potluck, because some of these roads that go under the railway might be closed off, but u wont know till u get there.

It requires a lot of patience from the driver as the navigator takes him on a wild goose chase all over the place. haha. My driver, vince, is a newcomer, and is very even tempered so that was good. He did not mind when we had to divert when the sub-railway crossing was closed. Some drivers dont like that.

The charity also gave each household a christmas bag. We had a spare bag, because of the missed delivery. I had a look inside. there was christmas pudding, and mince pie amongst other things. I normally dont like mince pies because they dont contain meat, the word mince is misleading because u assume it meant mince meat. They are not mince meat, but very sweet dried fruits. But simon came back tonight and bought some. he said they are very nice if warmed for 15secs in the microwave. and i tried one and it is true. They are very nice warmed up.

John has gone off to try another sex place near kings cross today. He left very early, about 9.30am. He plans to go to sunday service at st martins in the field, in trafalgar square first. He said he will be away the whole day. It is good, as it will keep him occupied rather than hang around the flat while i m away doing the charity delivery.

He wanted to bring along a bacon sandwich for his lunch, but when he tried to make it this morning he found that simon had eaten the bread and one bacon slice last night. Oh dear. That is an occasional hazard in this household. haha.

I got back at about 4pm, too late to go anywhere else. I was supposed to go visit rita at her food stall in brixton but that is definitely out of the question now. And i m too tired to make use of the free voucher given to me last night to go to the sex club again.

It is too soon after my cumming yesterday to go sexing today, but that is only me. John is still up for it. he got a lot of stamina, that man. that is because he had not cum yet, and so is still up for it.

When the days are so short, i find i dont fancy going out late. And add to that the cold, and it makes me want to stay in.

Added. John came back about 8pm. Such a long time to be gone. He said the church service is very gay friendly, and afterwards he had a chat with the church people, and had free mince pie and tea.

he was very impressed with the way they renovated the crypt. It is now a restaurant and souvenir space. He had roast turkey christmas lunch for £7 which he said was good value.

Then he walked all the way to kings cross to the sex place. he enjoyed it; staying there from 3pm to 7pm. having fun and chatting with people. he was attracted to it in the first place because they mentioned glory holes and he likes them. But he said the glory holes were set quite high up on the wall.

It is not a naked place, though some people were. It costs £6 entry, bring ur own alcohol, soft drinks on sale, and £1 cloakroom. In spite of his glowing report, I doubt whether i shall go there. I am very lazy when it comes to having sex. I dont like to travel far for it, or if it is a lot of bother. Perhaps because it is so easy to get.

All this is very mundane and i wont blame people for switching off reading all this long before arriving at this sentence. Feel free to do so.

london
John is visiting me for a week, before he flies off to norway, to spend christmas and new year with friends there. Rather him than me, i dont envy him at all, because over there, it gets light at 10am and dark at 2.30pm. london's short days are allready bad enough without paying good money to go to a even colder country and even less daylight. Not to mention all the delays/cancellations associated with snow storms when travelling in winter.
My soul dont want it, but obviously john's soul wants to go.

Anyway, whenever john comes we always go to my favourite sex pub, and this time is no different. I always enjoy myself whenever i go. And today was no different.

John has better control than me, and did not ejaculate, even though he tells me he had plenty of near misses. I came, in a threesome. It was too good not to come. haha. it was after 2hrs of playing(not with the same threesome of course) so it was a good lenght of time.

I waited for john to have enough, as i know he wont be able to find his way back to my flat. While waiting i chatted with guys there. they missed their chances to have sex with me though, because once i come, i m quite useless for it. One of them says he only likes guys from asia.He wanted to play with me. Too bad for him i was the only one there from asia tonight. haha.

We got a voucher which gives us free entry to 3 other naked nights the rest of the week. Though one of them which is on thursday will coincide with christmas eve and might not be naked. Ah well, i doubt I shall be going. I get very lazy to go when I dont have visitors for me to bring.

the bus service there has become more frequent, every 10-12mins and has improved a lot from last time when it was every 20mins. After 8pm, it reverts to 20mins intervals. It drops us off very near my flat. Whilst at the other end, after a half hour journey, it is a short walk to the place.

We came back to a lovely beef stew with swede and potato mash cooked by john. Lovely.

I noticed the balance on my oyster card seem to show double the amount of money i put in. I put in £5, but it reads £10. It is strange, is it a special bonus given to us oyster card people by london transport or what? No mention of this in any of the papers and it is unlikely they would do this thing unannounced right? or maybe they would not announce it beforehand, for fear people start loading their cards with a large amount, just so to take advantage of it.

window shopping in covent gdn.

london
John G is visiting me from poole. We decided to go walkabout in covent garden.

Walked there along the south bank, quite cold because of a wind but very sunny and is very enjoyable.

Noticed that there is a queue for the london eye, this is not unusual, but what is unusual is that i noticed the pods are leaving the embarkation point with only one or two passengers in them. It seems they are deliberately limiting the numbers in a pod.

(This is not a criticism. The queue was not very long, so i guess the policy is tailor the numbers allowed in each pod according to how many are waiting. Sounds reasonable to me. less people in each pod means there is more room to move about and see the view from all sides of the pod).

Covent garden is very touristy mainly selling expensive goods, but has a cheaper part in one corner so caters to every one. I go to enjoy the sights and sounds and as anyone who has been following me knows i m not a shopping person.

Lots of stalls set up in the courtyard in temporary structures selling food, the pies are particularly tempting.

I wonder whether the plethora of choices of food in those stalls may affect the custom of the cheaper priced cafe above the cheaper-end market; because it was relatively quiet.

That cafe area is not advertised much, and no signs anywhere pointing to it. I guess they dont want the tourists to go there. Not surprising, as they (whoever owns and runs the covent gdn area) would rather the tourist patronise the more expensive places in the main areas.

So only the locals and those savvy tourists will go to here. I noticed that only 3stalls were open.

There were other stalls with shutters down and give the air of places that have ceased trading, rather than just closed today. Only a chinese, indian, and english food stall were opened.

(Added. I have since heard the tv news and seen the snow drifts disrupting travel into london, so perhaps those stalls were closed because their owners could not get into london. hope that is the case rather than the economy causing closure of the stalls.

I think central london is just so covered in salt that the snow that did fall never did stay frozen for long. After what happened in feb this year, when the capital was snow bound, and buses stop running, they have been throwing the salt down like nobodies' business. haha. I daresay come february when the snow will come down with a vengence, london will run out of salt and we will get snow bound streets but than everyone will expect that in february and forgive london or so the mayor will hope.)

John bought the £2 soups.I got a hot and sour soup, john got a corn and chicken soup and it was a large bowl, and hot. For those who want a cheaper meal this is the place to go. You wont be able to get anything lower than the £2 soup elsewhere in covent garden.I remember soups used to cost £1 but then I have not been here for a long time. Even John says itis good value and hewont be able to find £2 soups in Poole.

Hmm, is that so? If true,i have really lost touch with the price of eating out. I have not bought anything from eating places for a very long time. And from what i see, i have been very wise not to. haha. hehe.

Someone left the independant newspaper and evening news lying around so i read it, which I like to do, so that was good.

We had a look inside the elton john shop, in Russell road, but did not wander around as there was a bag check£1. i only want to look, not buy so no point going in really. I thought of taking some photos of the clothes,if i had gone around the shop.

We asked a few people where the shop was, they did not know. Finally one guy who was selling the homeless paper, The big issue, told us where it was.

John did some shopping in sainsbury on the way back, as he wanted to cook a casserole for tomorrow and bacon and eggs tonight for dinner.
The bill came to £28. I was very surprised that it was so much but it seems to be easy to drum up such a bill without trying. I am always surprised that others so easily spend so much when they shop. I would be horrified if my bill comes to that much.

Is it just me, or what to be horrified at spending £28 for one shopping trip? I know i am different from everyone else but surely not that different???

Added 21.12.09
Simon told me he went yesterday to the supermarket at around 3pm hoping to find reduced bargains but there was none. but unfortunately he did not follow the principle that u dont spend on other things when u r there. He drummed up a £70 bill. haha. mainly on beer. So it seems not many are as disciplined as me. Ah well, that is not news haha. i have long suspected nobody is like me. Is there anyone who can go into a supermarket and not buy anything because there are no good bargains to be had or bargains on things i dont need nor want? I bet there is no one like that. If there is one, i would love to hear from them as it is so nice to know someone who is of similar mind to me.

found things

the grey one is from Accessorise, the black one is H&M,50%wool, the brown one has no brand name. After a wash they are as good as new.
london

People in the uk are very careless of their things, or what is more likely, gloves and headcaps are easy to lose.

I have been finding these things all over the place. 3 knitware headcaps and a single glove, so far.
I rescue them because they are useful and they look so woebegone lying there all alone, like strays.
I was thinking maybe I can give them to someone who might need it or if not, then I shall use it myself.
Now heavy snow is forecast for tomorrow ( luverly) and it is getting windy and cold, it will be nice to wear a different headgear every day just to ring the changes. haha.
Added 12.28pm 18.12.09 No snow, not the firt time the met office got it wrong. haha.

free lunch in trafalgar square

carrots , fruits, coriander from the free lunch people.

london

It snowed when i was there. I went around 12pm, and allready there was a long gueue for the food and for the groceries.

I didn't fancy queueing, and then i saw a large skip full of fruits and people were picking from it. So i got a bunch of bananas and then i joined the long gueue for the food.

the old lady next to me told me she and her husband saw it reported in the daily mail and there was mention of cauliflower being given out, so she came from bromley. They got free travel she said.

the husband came back and for some reason told her that he saw what was being given out and said she can have it but he was not joining her. So she left the queue too. I thought it was a pity because she seem the type who would enjoy it. Old people do have their set ways and it is a pity that she did not feel she can go ahead on her own. I always think it silly that with old married people they always want to do things together and usually it is the wife who gives way to the husband.
I said i m surprised people queue up because it is cooked from products that are thrown away. The lady behind me said it is free, that is why. The man next to me said his neighbour throws away a lot of veg and fruits.
I think we in uk have a strong faith in the food laws in uk, and we think the charities wont be able to do this if they contravene the health and safety food laws. And so if they are allowed to do this, the food must be ok for consumption.
Someof the food is mishapen and cannot be sold, others are past their sell by date.
There is a call to abolish the sell-by date but i hope that doesnot happen. It will allow the supermarkets to sell food for as late as they can get away with, but also it will stop us gettingbargain reductions at present when food is reduced in price when they come near to their sell by date.
I think it is good to encourage them to donate these foods to the charities.
The cooks cannot go wrong by cooking vegetarian and curry it. haha. Vegetables do not breed bacteria, unlike meat, and curry makes anything tastes nice.

It was a lovely vegetable curry with bread, onion bhagi and coriander. The plate that came with it was a lovely hexagonal paper plate with a wooden fork. Very chic i thought.
I decided to go to the charing cross library, to get out of the cold. And it was very nice as the computers were all empty and i was able to use one to get online.

Later i went to chinatown, but did not buy bean sprouts which was my original intention. They were selling what used to be 25p packs for 35p. I dont know whether it was a price increase or they put more per pack. Anyway i decided i wont bother.

Returning via trafalgar square, just past 2pm, and it was finishing, with the volunteers eating and the queue for the groceries was very short, so i got carrots and lots of grapes.

I met a guy who was smiling at all this, and we got chatting.. he said i should have seen new york. There everyday they have free cooked food for everyone who wants it, and even give u big amounts to take home to reheat and eat. he said the govt pays for it.
And he was quite scornful of today's do, saying it is only for a day and maybe never again.
he was quite sceptical about the charities doing this. I am sure they want to promote themselves, and why not? There were no one pushing collection tins at us, so it was very low key.The chap on stage merely asks us to contact companies to urge them to donate their raw food to the charities instead of throwing it away.

I said there are some churches here do cooked food for the homeless , but it is only once a fortnight, if ever, or once in a year.
Perhaps the uk's social services makes food kitchens not necessary, unlike in usa, where there is minimal social services.
the snowing was quite light at first, but on my way home, it became heavier. Rather fun and nice to see.

below 0C today. art student arrested for filming

london
I have been wondering when we shall be getting below 0 C and today london got it.

According to this weather website at 1.30am today 16.12.09, it was 0.3C and at 2am it was -0.4. the latest figure at 7am is -1.4C.

The funny thing is even though it is now colder than at night, I dont feel the cold nearly as much as last night . I wonder whether the sun has something to do with it, in that somehow it does not feel as cold when u can see the sun. And it is nice and sunny now.
added 1.15pm. First snow in london this winter. Not enough to coat the ground though. (typing this in the charing cross library. just been to trafalgar square for the freelunch.

Though if u want to be prosaic, I think it is warmer now because it is due to my downstairs neighbour's heating coming up my floor into my flat. haha.

Also, I think I am now able to find the most suitable way to dress to avoid feeling cold. My tip is... use a fleece hoodie.

I was at the gym yesterday, and while on the bike machine, i can see the tv screens and even though the sound was off, i saw the printout on screen, giving a list of things to do to keep warm.

I see all these morning chat programs bringing in the experts to talk about how old people can keep warm, and i think they should all start off by saying get a fleece hoodie. And a hot water bottle with a fleece covering.haahaa.

There has been a lot of reports about police using section 44 of the anti terrorist act to stop people from filming buildings. Here is a video of them in action. it is of a police community officer. later he got 4 policemen to arrest her.
At first i thought it is due to PCSO having too much time on their hands, but it seems the police are into it as well, by arresting her and charging her for 'causing harrasment, alarm, and distress to the public' and fine her £80.

What a sad state of affairs, that this country that i have admired for so long as a liberal country for freedom of its citizens and a police that used to be so respected by me, is turning into a police state.

This happened in the city of london, and they do have a different police force, so maybe it is only specific to the city police and not the metropolitan police which is responsible for the rest of london. Either that or they have to act on a PCSO's formal request.

Though i know a lot of regular police dont think much of PCSOs and so can and will overide their requests. But how many regular police constables will do so, and risk antagonising the PCSOs or even have a complaint made against them by the PCSO? many would just go along for a easy life.
This episode will hopefully make a lot of Police constables think twice about arresting someone for filming, as it looks very silly once u see the video evidence. it seems the police are the ones who are harassing her!!!

But thank goodness for the mobile phone cameras, now there is a film record and so the police cannot make things up.

PCSOs have very little powers, and maybe this section 44 makes them able to get some powers instead of walking the streets doing nothing. It can get very boring just doing that and giving directions to lost tourists. Perhaps there is also a quota of activities they all have to fulfill, if they want to give the impression to their boss that they are busy.

something new i did notknow before.

london

Simon just now walked into the bedroom where i was snug under the duvet watching tv and typing on my laptop, saying the cheek of it.

He explained he got a email from Ford the car manufacturer saying the spare wheel in his new Ka cannot be used in the back wheel because it might lead to steering problems. So they are sending him a sticker to put on it, to warn against it being used in the back wheel. That means if the back wheel punctures, he has to take a front wheel and replace it, and put the spare wheel in the front.

At first, simon was incensed that they did not give him another wheel, but when he started explaining to me that the spare wheel is narrower now to make more space in the boot, it must have dawned on him that it is a consequence of this narrower wheel that makes it not possible for ford to replace his spare wheel with one that can be fitted for the back axle.

It looks like modern spare wheels are all much narrower, to make it take up less space in the boot and it seems this is the consequence.

Well, I did not know all this. We live and learn don't we? haha.

This movie, called 'Noel',which i m half watching is about lonely people in new york being on their own during christmas and how they interact. Another one of those brainwashing movies to make people feel awful if they are on their own on christmas. better not watch these kinds of movies too much if u are the susceptible kind. haha.

I have no hangups about being on my own during christmas, preferring it in fact, so i can watch it without any qualms.haha. It's kind of enjoyable in a masochistic way. hehe. It is a very manipulative movie, thowing in all kinds of things to generate all the emotions. CAnnot see it for long though as it gets too far fetched. One impossible situation on top of another, haha.

I shifted channels to watch shawn the sheep, on bbc 1, it is a children's program but very well done and can amuse adults too. Simon tells me i can see all episodes of it via the internet but i cannot be bothered.

Frankly, i dont think the bbc should be spending money putting it online, and giving it free to everyone. As a license fee payer i think those people who are not paying should pay for it, whilst giving free access to those of us who can prove we have paid to view it free.

As it is all of us who have a landline phone have to pay an extra 50p a month for faster broadband to everyone. I dont even want to have faster broadband. I dont see any advantage to me, as i dont download movies etc. In fact, faster broadband just means more viruses and worms and advertising being downloaded even faster.

Ah well, I guess it is something we have to pay for the pleasure(such as it is) of having a landline.

tomorrow, 16.12.09 wednesday, at 12noon-2pm in trafalgar sq, a free lunch given to evryone, made from thrown away produce. Cooked by the charity Fareshare, and to publicise their work. It is not as bad as it sounds.Perfectly good food is thrown away in this country. They hope to feed 5000.
I think i shall go and see what it is about.

i agree with tom conti

london
I have often thought straights are so silly to get so uptight about adultery. I think it is a throwback to the obsession of legitimate heirs and regarding wives as property. At first it was one sided, in that the wife cannot stray. Then equality laws came in and the wives said it should apply to the husband too, and so today u get this situation when if u r married, it is expected both parties be faithful.

Tom Conti says adultery is no big deal, and that there are worst things u can do to each other than being unfaithful. i agree.

But i think even if married people agree with him that there are worst things u can do than being unfaithful, not many will go public and say it. They will be too afraid of the fall out.

Personally, i think the fuss about tiger woods being unfaithful is a lot of storm in a tea cup and i just skip any news about him.

more mundane stuff

london
My life is full of exciting mundane stuff. They may be mundane to everyone but i find them exciting.
It throws up the contrast with my life and mainstream life.

As usual i was in my gym. I go so often even the parttime receptionist noticed and he said I must be very keen. he said he has to force himself to workout, and have to watch what he eats. I said I enjoy coming here, so I dont have to force myself and i eat anything because i do it in moderation.

And a lady staff member who was near nodded and said it is no point working out if u have to deprive urself of whatever u like to eat. I have not heard this viewpoint before but it makes sense.

Today, the coffee machine has coffee, so hooray coffee is back.

In the sauna, i was commenting to another member how much i like this company's gym and he agreed. I mentioned the two branches so close to each other, and wondered why? he said the company had bought over a lot of gym companies over the years, for eg cannon, about 9yrs ago, where he was a member and he was transferred to this company and so ended up being a member. And all those takeovers result in gym branches close to each other.

Why they did not close some of them, i wonder? Perhaps it stops competitors opening up a rival gym nearby, and also it gives the impression there is competition when there is not.
One effect which they may not have thought of but turns out to be fortuitous is that we members may like to have the choice of two gyms to go to. I do.
he said in streatham the company had two branches close to each other too.

he mentioned he wished they would mend the soft drinks machine. He said though he doesnot like to drink the undiluted soft drinks, he liked them to be available so he can dilute the soft drink with plain water.

The soft drink machine in this gym has not been working for a long time, with the repair date kept being extended. now the notice say it will be repaired on 24 dec. Somehow i doubt it, haha. what self respecting repair man will be working on christmas eve??

added 14.12.09. this morning as i poured the coffee, i had a good look at the notice, and it says 24dec 2069.

Someone had left the sunday telegraph newspaper in the lounge, so i took it home to read. Walking back, i was looking at the front page and saw headlined on top of the front page 'free £5 voucher with no minimum spend' at the body shop. So i diverted to the body shop in victoria.

At the body shop, I was greeted by the assistant. there were no other customers. When she greeted me, i remembered I wanted coconut oil, But she said they dont sell it and showed me small bottles of scented coconut oil. Just oil that smells of coconut. Whatever for!!?

Well, I was really disappointed as i would like to buy coconut oil. I went round the shop many times trying to find something i like. But nothing. I ws about to leave without using the free voucher when i saw a pair of scrubbing glove, costing £3.99 and decided to get them if nothing else better. They are made up of different colours, and are a gimmick really, because if u want a good exfoliating scrub, one without fingers would do the job better.

The cashier said i cannot buy anything less than £5. That is unusual, because usually they just take the voucher and not give change. They have nothing costing £1 that i can throw into the mix. She picked up a nail board, costing £2, but i dont really want to spend any money on things i dont want. I might pay the £1 excess if i really wanted the scrubbing gloves, but I dont. Now I am quite glad i did not get them. haha. They will be just another extra thing to take into the showers and lose.
I suppose many people will pay the £1 but i dont see why i should be like other people.

If i dont want it, well then, i dont want it. haha. You will have to pay me to force me to take it.

There was a pack consisting of lotion and gel costing £5 exactly. I could take that i suppose, but i dont really want it cluttering up my flat unused and did not want to inflict it on others as a present haha, so i left the shop without using the voucher. it looks like i dont even want anything of theirs even though it is free. I said it is a pity they dont have coconut oil because I would buy that.

I was rather amused. is it just me who cannot find anything i like in this store, and would rather leave with nothing and forfeit the £5 voucher? Who are the people who shop here then?

I can remember in the past they used to stock small items which i would like, but not anymore it seems. it has been a long time since i entered a body shop, and it seems i have not missed much.

Maybe other branches have better stock.

I am just glad i dont have christmas gift shopping to do.

mundane stuff today

found this wine glass on the ground near my flat.
london
I thought i shall write this post in lucida grand script. Even though this post is about trivia, I shall write it in this grand script because trivia is grand to me.

It is a bright sunny day today, which is really something, since the past few days it has been cloudy. So even though cold, it is bracing and very joyful to walk about outdoors especially when i got my fleece hoodie up. I do think fleece is the best insulating material for warmth. I do love this type of day, bright blue cloudless sky, nippy with a fresh sting with every breath u take, and keeps u alert and make u walk fast and springy and in the process u can keep warm.

I saw the slanket featured in the news article. It is a fleece blanket with sleeves that some entrepreneur made up and it seems it is the best seller this christmas. When i saw it advertised in the daily mail, i did think it is useful, because even though you can wrap a fleece blanket round u, it always slips off or expose a bit of u when u shift position. This one remains air tight and keep the warmth in. but it is the devil to walk about in.
(Added 10.15am 13.12.9.How odd, I reread that article and was surprised to read that it is open at the back. Why? I thought the whole idea was that u r covered allover, and no chinks to lose warmth. I wonder whether people have been misled into thinking it is an all over blanket with sleeves, whilst it is more like an apron. Now that i realise it is an apron, i am mystified why it is a best seller. Are people that foolish? I think they were all fooled into thinking it is a all round blanket, and then when they received it and find out , it is too late and costly to return it.

But I think i shall stick to my fleece blanket since this slanket costs £25. I shall be content to use the fleece blankets which i get from charity shops for £1. Once i found a fleece blanket in the recycling bin. That was a lovely find. Who knows a few years down the road , these slankets will be sold in the charity shops or appear in the recycling bins. haha.
added. It has not been that cold in london to need the blankets.

The papers are advertising full of things to buy as presents. They all appear to me to be quite useless but nevermind, if anyone wants to buy them, i wont discourage you. The economy could do with it.

I bought a loaf of gluten and wheat free bread last night, reduced from £2.08 to 10p. Never again, as it is quite the most horrible bread i ever had.

I happen to be reading town mouse's blog and she mentioned forgetting to take in the washing last night and her husband's fleece pants froze. I do think fleece pants are the bees knees. they are perfect. I only got one pair, bright green ones which one teenager admired once. Not easy to find anywhere in the shops and never in the charity shops. Most people seem to get them online, at least that is the most common place to find them when i googled it.

I got a letter from my bank saying that they tried to deliver my renewed debit card, but i was not in and to contact them. It was the same courier company that brought John M's credit card from nat west bank. I went online to request them to deliver it in the afternoon the next day, but there was no option to specify the time.
So i was thinking i might have to wait the whole day the next day. But at about 11.45 am I got a call and it was a recorded message telling me they are unable to deliver it and to get online to arrange another date. But i did not hear anyone press my door bell.

Anyway, i gave up on them, and did not bother to arrange a new date.

That was yesterday. Today, while i was sleeping, they came in the afternoon. Simon opened the door to the courier, and when i woke i saw the letter with the credit card on the shelf where simon put it.

The funny thing was simon went out to buy dumpling mix soon afterwards(he seemed to have this craving for dumplings lately. These are english dumplings and not a patch on chinese dumplings) and he left the curry simmering, and so i woke up to an empty flat with this simmering pot of curry and my letter. Like the bloody marie celeste, i can tell you.

When he got back with his dumpling mix, I asked simon whether they asked him for identification. He said they did not. Even though it was clearly stated that identification is needed.

Ah well, that is security for you. haha. But at least i did not have to be woken up by simon to get my ID and to sign for the letter.

My local library stock the saturday papers, but today, they all have their tv guides missing. I wonder why? So i have to go to the city hall library which is also near my flat; which is only open in the morning, to get it. There they keep the saturday papers behind the counter and u have to ask the librarian for it.

I wish the evening standard would publish a tv guide in the ES magazine which they distribute on friday together with the free daily paper. That would make it worth picking up and keeping. As it is there is no point getting that magazine so i dont bother.

there is a free scarf voucher from a company called phase eight in the telegraph today. But they dont have many branches and u can only redeem it from their branches today. Hope someone got it and are pleased with it. It is a woman's scarf. They have a branch in wandsworth and in the city.

added 6pm. Simon came into the lounge holding the two pieces of the broken ladle. he said he picked it up from the draining board and it just broke.
I remember mentioning him breaking the beer glass which i found and my friend said he does seem accident prone doesn't he?

he sure is. But then, i got those things for nothing, like the beer glass which i found on the street, or in the recycling bins, or for very little in charity shops so i am not upset at him breaking them. I will say this, i will be very upset if i had paid good money for them, but i know him u see, so i dont buy expensive stuff and always try to get things free.

only a few weeks ago i found a ladle, so it will replace this one that he broke. It's interesting that i kept it. Normally i would not take a ladle as i allready have one.In fact, in the same bag as the ladle, there were 3 torches. Now i wish i had taken them as i could use it as bike lights. At that time, i was not clear that i might need them. Just goes to show I should just take things first and decide what to do with them later. But i have this reluctance to pick things up so as not to clutter up the flat with lots of things i dont need. I always believe in leaving things and let others have them who might make better use or are in more urgent need of them.

Even now, i dont really need torches that urgently as i dont really fancy riding the bike at night and in winter. In summer the need for lights do not occur as summer days are long.

Only this morning, i found a wine glass containing red wine on the ground near the wall of the block of flats. I took it back, cleaned it and presto i got a nice wine glass. In this country, people throw things away. They are rich or careless about their things.

By retrieving these glasses i stop vandals from breaking them, and at the same time i reuse them for myself. And if simon breaks them in future, i dont mind.
